The client provides free websites that connect people experiencing a significant health challenge to family and friends, making each health journey easier. Powered by generous donors, the client’s websites offer a personal and private space to communicate and amplify love, hope and compassion when health matters most.

The client’s website offers the following features to users:

Business Challenge

Silicus' Android engineers had developed the first Android based application for the client in 2010 (Read more about the Android smart phone development project here). The application was a successful release on the Android market place with a range of 10,000 – 50,000 installations since the release, with an average user rating of 4.1/5.

With the growing popularity of Android based tablets from Motorola, HTC, Samsung and many others, the client wanted the existing application to be compatible for Android tablets. The client also had new functionality changes that it wanted to release as part of its version release 2.2 which essentially was support for Android tablets and new functionality releases.

Silicus had developed the existing Android smart phone application and hence was familiar with the application architecture, business logic and functionality (Read more about the Android smart phone application development here).

In order to ensure compatibility between Android smartphones and tablets, Google created the Android Fragments API along with Android ver 3.0 release in March 2011. Silicus Android developers used the Android Fragment API’s to extend the application to Android tablets.

Android fragment API’s took care of most of the UI compatibility and device specific variations with minimal code changes on the part of the Android developers. Only minor UI layout issues and fine tuning was taken care of by the Silicus Android team.

The team also created the new functional enhancements required by the client. The functional enhancements for authors were:

  • Add a title for a journal entry
  • Publish a pending site created on the CaringBridge website
  • Share a link to Journal entry on facebook
  • General Enhancements
  • Update profile information

As with the earlier smart phone version, JSON was used for the request response mechanism.
