International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes are alphanumeric designations given to every diagnosis, description of symptoms and cause of death attributed to human beings. More importantly, it enables global organizations to compile mortality and morbidity statistics.
Moving to ICD-10 is expected to impact all the care providers. Due to the increased number of codes, change in the number of characters per code, and increased code specificity, this transition will require significant planning, application upgrades, thorough test plans and other ancillary investments. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has mandated that ICD-10 codes must be used on all HIPAA transactions, including outpatient claims with dates of service, and inpatient claims with dates of discharge on and after October 1, 2013. Meeting this stringent deadline is being dubbed as the Y2K equivalent of the healthcare industry. However, Silicus believes that with the right and disciplined approach, the ICD-10 transition can be done in a timely and cost-effective manner.
